The Web Designer & Editor serves as a member of the Learning Abroad Center Communications team, providing holistic direction on website design, innovations, and content management. Work includes development and comprehensive maintenance of all website components. Duties are completed under the supervision of the Marketing Director.



Copy Editing

  • Copy-edit website content in line with the LAC Style Guide grammatically-correct copy
  • Implement content moderation policies
  • Train staff (40) to write effectively for the web

Content Management & Strategy

  • Serves as content strategist, flexing between detailed task view and holistic website view
  • Masters content familiarity in order to make global changes to website (900+ pages)
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of LAC admin processes to increase the efficiency of web design solutions
  • Develop and implement a high-level Search Engine Optimization strategy

Web Design & Front-end Development

  • Serves as webmaster and designer for LAC websites/web applications
  • Serves as system administrator content management system (CMS)
  • Coordinates new website design: requirement gathering, design prototyping, usability & user experience (UX) testing, security, and ongoing development and maintenance process.
  • Evaluates, schedules, and identifies resources for design projects
  • Design and codes website by using HTML, CSS, Git, and the Adobe Suite
  • Develop new website functionality & tools
  • Ensures UofMN brand standards are met

Web Accessibility

  • Ensure web pages and assets comply with World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards and are compatible with assistive technologies (e.g. screen readers)
  • Ensure readability & usability for maximum accessibility to AA web standards


  • Manage all technical aspects of Drupal and guide website architecture
  • Utilize local tools such as node, npm, Webpack & DDEV to prototype development
  • Use version-control systems such as GitHub to manage code libraries and revisions
  • Develop responsive, mobile-first themes to realize final designs, utilizing Twig, SASS, & JavaScript/jQuery
  • Develop & code custom Drupal modules using PHP
  • Develop applications to act as an interface between Slate and Drupal


  • Create one-time ad-hoc reports or data analysis regarding website performance, contribute to or manage the process of pulling, formatting and submitting data to outside entities to communicate results.
  • Conduct research, analysis and planning for various website related projects/initiatives
  • Document business processes and tasks
  • Develop and execute training & learning tools for web contributors, specifically to educate & develop LAC staff on our Drupal CMS
  • Manage Drupal CMS users and CMS staff training
  • Familiarity with Google analytics 4, and tag manager

Other duties as assigned-5%

  • Intranet for UofMN staff (Watercooler)
  • Intranet for UofMN staff and onsite staff around the world (Atlas)
  • Supervise student worker (1)


Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in one of the following areas: English, Strategic Communications, Communications, MIS, Journalism, or related field with at least two years of experience, or master’s degree
  • Experience of Drupal
  • Basic proficiency with HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, and familiarity with web accessibility standards

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mastery of Drupal
  • Experience as webmaster with front end and back end development
  • Experience in performing JavaScript/jQuery, PHP
  • Project management and detail orientation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Innovative, curious, delights in solving puzzles
  • Comprehensive understanding of how web content is prepared and deployed
  • Experience with CMS, Git, databases (MySQL, Oracle)
  • Comfort using the command line
  • Previous work experience in a University/College campus or similar environment
